From Grain To Powder: How Our Cordyceps Is Grown In BC
By Jade Stevens · October 5, 2026 · 5 min read

Here's something we want to be upfront about: we don't grow our Cordyceps ourselves. We chose the people who do.
The Cordyceps militaris in Rewild Energy is CordyFuel™, grown by NuCelium in Coldstream, British Columbia. CordyFuel™ is NuCelium's trademark and their work. Our job is to bring it to you, clearly labelled and tested. Here's what happens before it ever reaches your pouch.
First, Which Cordyceps?
The Cordyceps you may have heard stories about, Cordyceps sinensis, grows wild on insect larvae high on the Tibetan Plateau. It's rare, hard to trace and very expensive.
Cordyceps militaris is a related species that can be cultivated. It grows on grain, not insects, which means it can be grown cleanly, consistently and close to home. It also naturally contains cordycepin, the compound it's best known for, and that's what we use to measure consistency from batch to batch.
Where It's Grown
NuCelium grows in a 45,000 square foot facility in BC's Okanagan, running on solar power from one of the largest rooftop arrays in the province. They grow from their own DNA-verified strains, so it starts with the right organism, not a guess.
From Grain To Powder, Step By Step
- Cook. Organic sorghum grain is cooked in an autoclave.
- Bag. The grain is cooled and portioned into grow bags.
- Sterilize. The bags go back through the autoclave so nothing unwanted survives.
- Inoculate. Each bag is seeded with living mycelium from a fully mature bag.
- Grow. The Cordyceps grows for 4 to 6 weeks. Bright orange fruiting bodies push up out of the grain.
- Harvest. The bags are opened onto trays and the whole colonized block is broken apart.
- Dry. Everything goes into the dryer together: the mycelium, the young and mature fruiting bodies, and the compounds they released into the grain.
- Mill. The dried material is milled into a fine powder.
- Test. Every lot is lab tested before it's released.
Why Harvest The Whole Thing?
This is what "full spectrum" means on our label. Instead of keeping one part of the mushroom and throwing the rest away, the whole organism is kept: fruiting body and mycelium together, along with everything they made while growing. Nothing is extracted out and nothing is added in.
It also means the powder honestly includes some of the grain the mycelium grew on. We'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. (There's more on this in fruiting body vs mycelium.)
How Every Batch Is Checked
CordyFuel™ is standardized to a minimum of 3 mg/g of cordycepin in every batch, verified by third-party testing before release. Each lot is also checked for species identity, beta-glucans and polysaccharides, seven microbial tests and gluten.
In 2025, CordyFuel™ won Best Fruiting Body / Full Spectrum at the Cordy Cup in Sweden. We're proud to sell it.
You can see the current numbers for every product on our lab results page.
Why This Matters To Us
We started REWILD because we wanted to know exactly what was in our mug. Who grew it. Where. On what. How it was tested. Knowing the answer to every one of those questions is the whole point.
Want to try it? Rewild Energy is the powder, and the Energy Tincture is the same CordyFuel™ in an alcohol-free liquid.
